As a Boat Cleaning & Detailing company we would love to say “Yes, it must be washed every 3 days and you should choose us to do so”. However, this is reality and though this answer might help fuel my pipe dream of owning a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta one day, it is 100% unrealistic and entirely not necessary.
But, when it comes to washing your boat after every trip you take it out on we strongly recommend that you should wash your boat every time if you can.
Why?
- Saltwater: The number 1 reason is because of Saltwater. To your boat, it can be very harmful to your boat’s exterior causing rust, wood warping, & the breakdown of important materials such as wax and sealants over time. If left untreated, the effects of residue saltwater will impact the longevity of your boat & potentially cause a range of maintenance issues. For something that you care about it deeply and have invested a lot of money into this is something you want to avoid.
- Boat Maintenance & Aesthetics: Being the active boat owner you are taking your boat out regularly will naturally bring dirt & grime onto the vessel (not to mention more exposure to saltwater as we have already touched on). You do not want your boat to get to a point where dirt residue is embedded onto the topside of the boat causing it to need a deep, chemically induced clean to remove it. This is bad for the environment, bad for you, and potentially bad for the boat (especially the wax and sealants).
Helpful Post-Trip Wash down Tips
- Remove Salt: After every trip, wash your boat down with fresh water, a decent boat soap, and even a Wash and Wax solution. Not doing so increases the chances of maintenance & longevity issues.
- Thorough Washes Are Best: Salt can be very sticky and just attacking it with some fresh water a hose won’t guarantee that it will be successfully removed. You need to thoroughly scrub with boat soap to ensure you remove all the salt you can.
- Pay Attention To Your Windows: Not removing salt spray from your windows will leave behind extremely hard-to-remove water spots which if created will need to be dealt with separately. If you can Wash, Rinse, and dry your windows to keep them clean and clear of salt spray.
