Spring commissioning is more than just checking engine fluids and battery banks. A vessel’s exterior surfaces endure months of winter dampness, tree pollen, diesel exhaust, and mineral runoff while tied to marina slips. A systematic pre-season detail not only restores pride of ownership but prevents permanent etching of costly components.
1. Waterline Scum Line & Algae Removal
Winter tides leave heavy tannin, algae, and mineral stains along the vessel waterline and exhaust outlets. Acidic waterline cleaners must be applied with care—excessive dwell time or runoff over unsealed trailers and running gear can cause acid burns on metal hardware. Neutralize immediately after removal.
2. Isolate Deck Scupper Runoff Channels
Examine the drainage paths beneath deck drains and flybridge scuppers. Black streak staining occurs when environmental airborne fallout concentrates in rainwater and washes over the hull. Polishing and applying a dedicated hydrophobic sealant over these channels allows runoff water to bead away cleanly rather than depositing black lines.
3. Canvas, Isinglass & Clear Enclosures
Clear vinyl and Strataglass bridge enclosures require specialized care. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaners or abrasive towels, which turn flexible vinyl yellow and brittle. Wash with pH-neutral soap, dry with plush microfibers, and apply a specialized plastic polish with UV blockers.
